Tips for Increasing 1st Year Survival For Longleaf Seedlings
Plant Early * We recommend early fall planting as soon as adequate moisture becomes available. October plantings are not out of the question if there is adequate moisture. Early fall plantings seem to benifit container seedlings by allowing the roots time to "break out" and move into surrounding soil. By spring there should be several inches of new root growth.
Seedlings should be planted as soon as possible after extraction. Although we have heard stories of seedlings left in the box for a month and still getting good survival, we do not recommend holding seedlings in the box for over a week. During this time seedlings should be protected from heat and cold. It is very important that seedlings not be allowed to freeze in the box.
